Planning perspective
How I’d plan this experience
If you want to cross into the Yukon rather than stay close to Skagway, this 6½-hour outing offers a scenic, stop-and-look alternative to simply viewing the landscape from the road. I’d choose it for travellers who enjoy a guided drive, photo stops and a substantial change of scenery—and who are comfortable spending much of the day travelling by bus or van. The border and the long drive are part of the decision, not small details to leave until departure day.
A good fit if the journey matters as much as the stops
The appeal here is the range of landscapes and viewpoints along the Klondike Highway, with guided narration and multiple photo stops. The listed route includes the White Pass summit, Emerald Lake, Carcross and the Yukon sign; the Carcross Desert is an extra stop that may depend on timing and weather. I’d recommend this to you if you like seeing how the scenery changes across a long drive and want a guide to put the area into context.
Wildlife may add a memorable moment, but sightings are not assured. I’d treat them as a bonus, rather than the main reason to book: the scenery and planned stops are the more dependable draw.
Choose this for a guided road tour, not a short excursion
There is one listed tour option, so the practical choice is whether this format suits you—not which itinerary variant to select. The itinerary includes scenic stops and a 75-minute lunch and Wild Adventure Yukon visit. That gives the day some breaks from the drive, but it remains a full-length road outing.
I’d lean toward this tour if you value covering more ground and hearing about the region along the way. If you would rather minimize time in a vehicle, the trade-off is real: travellers specifically mention a lot of driving, even while praising the scenery and history.
Plan for the border before you plan the day
This tour crosses out of the United States into Canada, so documents matter. The listed instructions require a passport for most travellers; US and Canadian citizens may instead use an original birth certificate paired with government-issued photo ID. Foreign travellers need to be able to leave the US, enter Canada and re-enter the US. I’d settle this question before choosing the excursion, especially if anyone in your party has a different citizenship or document situation.
Allow time for the required check-in: the instructions specify arriving 15 minutes before departure. Pickup is listed at Skagway cruise docks, but you need to identify your ship when arranging it.
Lunch is included; keep expectations grounded
A family-style barbecue lunch is included at Wild Adventure Yukon, with vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options available upon request. I think that makes the long outing easier to plan, but I wouldn’t book on the assumption that the meal will be a highlight: feedback on it ranges from enthusiastic to merely satisfactory. The stronger recurring reason to choose the trip is the scenery and the breadth of the drive.

This amazing photostop is at the summit of the White Pass and Klondike Highway
Tour of downtown Skagway before or after going up to Canada and exploring British Columbia & the Yukon & Drop off in downtown after tour if you wish
Pitchfork Falls is a 2,000-foot cascade into the Skagway River, viewable from the Klondike Highway between Skagway, Alaska and the border with British Columbia. The falls goes underneath a railroad bridge of the White Pass and Yukon Railway
We stop by various buildings and scenic points of the Klondike Gold Rush, including the White Pass and points along the Klondike Highway as we go to Canada (British Columbia and The Yukon)
While some in our group are participating in the dog sled mushing expedition, you'll go to the Welcome to the Yukon sign just up the Klondike Highway. This is a fun photo stop with First Nations tribe members offering authentic goods for sale.
See this uniquely colored lake 10 minutes north of Carcross Villege
This Extra stop may be included (timing & weather dependent.) Somewhat hidden along the Klondike Highway is this unique inland desert - sand dunes as a result of receding glaciers thousands of years ago have formed the world's smallest inland desert!
