Planning perspective
How I’d plan this experience
This Haines photography outing is a good fit if you want more than a scenic ride: the appeal is spending time in the Chilkat Valley with a guide who can help you look for photographs, whether you bring a camera or use your phone. I’d choose it for someone happy to let the day’s light, weather and wildlife shape the outing. The trade-off is that the ferry departure is firm, and neither wildlife sightings nor particular photographic conditions are guaranteed.
Best for curious photographers, not just camera owners
You don’t need specialist gear to take part: the tour description says a point-and-shoot or smartphone will work, while a professional photographer-guide offers help with photography. Several travellers specifically valued learning techniques on their phones, so I think this could suit a beginner as well as someone bringing a dedicated camera.
It’s a shared tour rather than a private booking, with a stated maximum of 10 travellers. I’d recommend it if you like the idea of a small group and some shared flexibility, rather than expecting a one-to-one session throughout.
Choose the outing for its adaptable focus
The guide scouts locations, and the itinerary says you can work together on which places and subjects to focus on. That makes this a more appealing choice if you have a photographic interest you can explain, rather than a fixed checklist of stops. Travellers describe guides adapting advice to people’s requests and experience; I’d arrive ready to say what you most want to photograph, while staying open to alternatives.
Season can influence the photographic emphasis: the description highlights wildflowers and bald eagles in May, June and July, and salmon runs and possible brown-bear activity from August. These are seasonal possibilities, not a promise of a sighting.
Plan around the ferry, not just the photo stops
The listed duration is six and a half hours, including a 45-minute catamaran ride each way between Skagway and Haines. The ferry begins loading 15 minutes before departure and leaves on time, so I’d treat finding your meeting point and arriving promptly as essential parts of the plan. Follow the instructions for your specific dock; the meeting place varies by dock.
A portable lunch is included, and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are listed with 48 hours’ advance notice. The experience also involves walking on uneven, rocky surfaces and calls for a moderate level of fitness, so it may not suit everyone. Motorized wheelchairs and scooters cannot be accommodated.
Allow for weather and changing wildlife
I’d go for the photography guidance and the chance to respond to conditions, not with a particular animal encounter as the sole measure of success. The itinerary notes that lighting and weather affect which locations offer photographic highlights, and says the guide will make every effort to provide safe bear viewing when bears are present. Travellers describe both rainy or chilly conditions and days when wildlife became a major focus; that variation is part of the outing’s real trade-off.
The tour returns to Skagway by catamaran, but the experience is not a guaranteed wildlife itinerary. If your priority is a specific subject, think of it as a preference to discuss with the guide, not a certainty.

Itinerary and highlights
Escape the crowds of Skagway on a small group photography tour in the stunning Chilkat Valley. Your expert photographer guide will assist you in capturing the best of the Chilkat Valley's unique attractions.
The trip begins with a 45-minute 100-passenger shuttle catamaran ride along the steep-walled fjord between Skagway and Haines.
Your guide has scouted out the best areas for the day's photo shoot. Since this is a exclusive tour, you will be able to work directly with the guide to decide which locations and subject matter you want to focus on. Depending on the lighting and weather, different locations in the Chilkat Valley boast specific photographic highlights. May, June, and July feature wildflowers and bald eagles. Beginning in August, pink salmon begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn and brown bear often come down to the river to feed. When bears are present, every effort will be made to give you safe bear viewing and photography.
The theme is flexibility, fun and learning. A simple point and shoot camera or smartphone will work, but by all means, bring all your photo gear. You’ll return to Skagway by catamaran.
