Skagway City and Summit Tour

About this experience

Enjoy the classic Skagway tour!

Our tour will take you down Broadway, Skagway's historic main street, and we'll point out various points of interest and photo stops. As we leave Skagway, we'll climb over 3,500 feet in elevation up to the summit, where Gold Rushers had to hand-carry all their gear on their way into Canada - except you'll do it from a heated bus.

Our tour will pick up all guests and get you back in time for your ship.

Sights along the way:
- Brackets Toll road
- Pitchfork Falls
- Bridal Veil Falls
- Moore Bridge Overlook
- Welcome to Alaska sign
- Travel to the White Pass Summit
- International Falls
- Tormented Valley
- Skagway town overlook
- Drop off in town or at your ship

Our tour will have 5 to 6 photo stops along the route and we will slow down for the others. Time at stops may vary and are weather dependent. Tour is 2.5 hours in length.

Planning perspective

How I’d plan this experience

If you want a compact introduction to Skagway’s Gold Rush history and the mountain scenery beyond town, this 2½-hour drive is a practical shore-excursion choice. I’d choose it for the combination of guided context and chances to get out for photos, rather than for a long stop at any one sight. The experience depends partly on conditions: weather and road conditions can change which stops you make and what you can see.

Who this suits

I think this works especially well if you want to see more than downtown but have limited time ashore. The route pairs a narrated look at historic Skagway with a drive toward White Pass, and the tour lists several waterfalls, overlooks and highway sights. It is a scenic outing, not a deep visit to each place; the advertised duration is 2.5 hours, with multiple photo stops along the way.

The guide’s commentary is part of the appeal: past guests mention informative Gold Rush storytelling and photo opportunities. I’d pick this over a sightseeing outing focused only on staying aboard a vehicle if you value brief chances to step out and take pictures.

Choosing the right way to see White Pass

This is a road tour in a van or touring bus, with a guide and multiple scenic stops. I’d choose it if you’d rather have opportunities to pause for photographs than take in the landscape entirely from a moving vehicle. Some past guests specifically valued being able to get out, but that doesn’t make it the right fit for everyone: if your priority is a rail journey, this is a different kind of excursion, not a substitute train experience.

The listing gives one tour option, rather than a menu of different routes or durations. The practical decision is whether a guided drive with stops fits your day and interests.

Plan for variable views and stops

Keep expectations flexible. The tour description says time at stops varies with weather, and the additional information notes that stops can change with road conditions and timing. Fog affected one past outing, so I wouldn’t treat clear summit views—or a specific stop—as guaranteed. I’d choose this for the overall drive and interpretive experience, not for a promise of one perfect photograph.

The route is described as climbing more than 3,500 feet toward the summit; the listed sights include Pitchfork Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the Welcome to Alaska sign. Stops are brief and distributed along the journey, so this is a broad scenic sampler rather than an unhurried visit to every listed point.

Shore-excursion logistics

The tour lists pickup and drop-off at cruise ship docks, which makes it convenient if you’re arriving by ship. My advice is to build in time to find the correct dock meeting point: instructions differ by dock, and check-in is 15 minutes before departure. Passports are required for re-entry into the United States; the listed alternative applies to US or Canadian citizens with an original birth certificate and government-issued photo ID.
