About this experience

The Chilkoot Hike and Float Tour is an active, family-oriented hiking adventure along the world famous Chilkoot Trail. This wilderness hike takes place in the heart of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Learn about the Gold Rush, Native Alaskan, and natural history of the region.

Depart Skagway for a 10-mile (16 km) scenic van tour along the coastline to the Chilkoot Trail trailhead and then enjoy 1.5 to 2 hours of hiking and 40 minutes on the raft. The hike is moderately strenuous so please be in good condition. Have your camera ready for occasional wildlife sightings both on land and in the water. Get away from the crowds in Skagway and get immersed in the natural beauty of the Dyea valley during the coastal forest hike and while floating down the peaceful river.

Itinerary and highlights

Hike first 2 miles of historic Chilkoot Trail.

Travel to and from the Chilkoot Trail on the Dyea road from Skagway. Distance is about 9 miles each way.

You will be traveling through the Dyea valley on the river raft after the hiking portion on the Chilkoot Trail.

Meeting and pickup information

  • WE MEET YOU AT YOUR CRUISE SHIP PIER MEETING AREA. DO NOT GO TO A DIFFERENT CRUISE SHIP PIER THAN YOURS. Look for a representative holding a SKAGWAY FLOAT TOURS sign. Please be 10-15 minutes early. Alternatively, you may meet at our office downtown at 3rd and Broadway in the Golden North Hotel Lobby (map location). Look for the Large Golden Dome on the top of the building. Please check in with the office staff so we know you are meeting there instead of your ship pier. Ship pickup is default for all cruise ship passengers unless you check in at our office for pickup or call ahead to change your pickup.
