About this experience
Combine sightseeing and river rafting on this relaxing Skagway shore excursion. Enjoy a beautiful 10-mile (16-km) drive along the coast to the Dyea Valley, an old Gold Rush settlement rich with history. On the drive, you may spot seals, eagles and other wildlife (however wildlife sightings are not guaranteed). See the start of the famous Chilkoot Trail, where thousands journeyed in pursuit of gold in 1898. Gear up with lifejackets, rubber boots, and rain ponchos (if necessary) for the peaceful (approx. 40 minute) float through lush coastal forest with mountain views. Enjoy nature away from the crowds in a beautiful Alaskan setting.

Planning perspective
How I’d plan this experience
If you want a gentle way to see the landscape beyond Skagway without committing to a strenuous rafting trip, this float looks like a thoughtful fit. The outing pairs a narrated coastal drive into Dyea Valley with a roughly 40-minute float on the Taiya River, and includes basic river gear. I’d choose it for scenery, local history and an easygoing change of pace—not for a guaranteed wildlife encounter or an excursion to explore the old Dyea townsite.
Who I’d recommend it for
This suits you if you’d rather take in forest, mountains and river scenery than spend your shore time on a demanding activity. The tour is described as suitable for many ages and skill levels, with a minimum age of 2; that makes it worth considering for a mixed-age group, while still leaving the actual float as the central activity.
Wildlife is a possible bonus, not a reason to book on its own. Seals and eagles may be spotted on the drive, but sightings aren’t guaranteed, so I’d go for the landscape and narrated history first.
Know what the outing includes—and doesn’t
The experience combines a scenic drive to Dyea Valley with a peaceful float on the Taiya River. Along the way, the overview points to the Chilkoot Trail’s Gold Rush history and the valley’s coastal forest and mountain views. I think that mix makes this more appealing to curious scenery-seekers than to anyone expecting a long rafting run.
One distinction matters: the tour travels through Dyea Valley by van and raft, but does not visit the old townsite. If seeing that historic settlement itself is your priority, this itinerary won’t deliver that stop.
Plan for a compact, weather-exposed excursion
The stated duration is about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes, making this a relatively compact shore option. The drive and float are both part of the experience, rather than a lengthy stop-based tour. Rain doesn’t automatically mean the outing won’t run: it operates in all weather, and lifejackets, rubber boots and a poncho if needed are provided for the raft portion.
My advice is to dress in layers and be comfortable with the possibility of wet weather. The tour can be cancelled if the river is in flood stage, so there is a genuine natural-condition limitation even though ordinary rain is expected to be accommodated.
Make the pickup plan explicit
Cruise passengers are picked up at their own ship’s pier meeting area by default; the instructions say to arrive 10–15 minutes early and look for a Skagway Float Tours sign. There’s also a downtown office meeting option, but you need to check in there or call ahead so the pickup is changed. I’d settle that detail before departure day rather than assume you can simply meet at whichever point is more convenient.
The shared raft/group maximum is 11, which gives you a sense of the group scale, though it isn’t a private outing. If you’re arranging a family or group booking, note that weights are requested when booking to plan raft space.
